Our Partnership with Tree Aid

As professional London tree surgeons, we spend every working day around trees, so we have always believed we should give something back to them too. That is why, since 2018, GraftinGardeners has made a monthly donation to Tree Aid, a Bristol-based charity working with communities across the drylands of Africa. Over the years those donations have added up to nearly £10,000, helping to grow trees, restore degraded land and support lasting livelihoods in some of the places hit first and hardest by the climate crisis.

Who Are Tree Aid?

Tree Aid was founded in Bristol in 1987 by a group of foresters responding to the famine in Ethiopia. They believed that once emergency relief ended, communities needed a long-term solution, and that in the drylands of Africa, trees are exactly that: a lifeline. Nearly four decades on, Tree Aid works hand in hand with communities in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Niger and Senegal, where the climate crisis is shrinking fertile land and putting pressure on the lives of more than 300 million people.

Crucially, Tree Aid does not just plant trees. Every project is led by the local people who know their land best, combining tree growing with soil restoration, food security, forest governance and enterprise development, turning tree products like shea butter into sustainable incomes that pay for essentials such as healthcare and education.

The Impact So Far

Tree Aid is a relatively small charity making a very big impact. In 2024/25 alone, they grew over 7.3 million trees, supported more than 1.2 million people, restored 7,726 hectares of land and helped drive a 23% increase in average household income across their project communities, and 55% of the people they worked with directly were women. Since 1987 they have grown over 40 million trees and supported nearly 4 million people. On average, Tree Aid grows nearly two trees every minute.
